Courier Mail (News Paper - Brisbane) Review on "John Thomas" Naxos CD
Lipman Harp Duo
<John Thomas Harp
Music>
(Naxos)
* * * *
WITH this collection of music by
nineteenth century Welsh harpist John Thomas, Brisbane musicians the Lipman Harp
Duo show how rewarding it can sometimes be to glance back a century or two.
Thomas is hardly a household name today, yet in his day was fêted throughout
Europe as performer and composer, and left an enduring legacy in<David of the
White Rock>. The melody has become synonymous with Wales and Sebastien
Lipman, a former harpist with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra during the Herbert
von Karajan era, highlights its poignant simplicity in this recording, and with
his wife Sayo forms a close musical partnership to explore Thomas` music for
solo harp and duo combinations.
The two launch into the opening
item <Love`s Fascination> with bold strokes, maintaining interest
throughout the program with a variety of textures and wide range of moods and
colours. The playing is as beguiling as it is virtuosic. Sebastien sets an
acutely sensitive style in <The Minstrel’s Adieu to his Native Land>, in
contrast to the bright tones in Sayo`s solos. In duo they give <Men of
Harlech> all the bite this patriotic song requires and hold the tension right
to the closing <Crossing the Stone> in <Cambria> suite. -
Patricia Kelly.
